Kaohsiung Harbor: Gateway to the World

Kaohsiung is a beautiful metropolis surrounded by mountains and ocean.

Its world-class harbor serves as the most important key to link Taiwan to the world.

City councilors work collaboratively to realize their vision for Kaohsiung and contribute their wisdom and efforts for the best interests of the City.

Kaohsiung possesses vast hinterland and is rich in cultural resources, which the City utilizes to foster regional development and to generate various incentives and initiatives for increasing its prosperity and competitiveness.

The mountains and forests overflow with vibrant native culture.  The green countryside is rich in Hakka customs. Kaohsiung is widely known for its abundant agriculture, fishery, and animal husbandry.

The sparkling Asian New Bay Area, the convenient transportation systems, and the green urban landscape together create the unique nature and charm of the City.

Night markets and shopping districts are flooded with tourists, reflecting the vivid vitality of Kaohsiung.

The diverse industries and businesses make the City a shining global metropolis.

Before 2010, Kaohsiung City and Kaohsiung County councilors had worked diligently for more than 60 years, providing a sound foundation for the most important city in southern Taiwan.

Back in 1946, Kaohsiung City Senate and Kaohsiung County Senate were established on April 13th and 15th, respectively.
Both Senates were reorganized into Councils on January 11, 1951.

Later in 1979, Kaohsiung City was elevated to a special municipality.  As a result, the council was restructured and started its first term on December 25, 1981.

When the “Local Government Act” was amended on April 15, 2009, legitimizing the consolidation of Kaohsiung City and Kaohsiung County, it marked a new milestone of metropolitan autonomy in the history of Kaohsiung.

Prior to city-and-county consolidation, the City went through 9 terms as Provincial City Council, 1 term as Provisional City Council and 7 terms as Municipality City Council while the County went through 16 terms.  Following the consolidation on Dec. 25, 2010, Kaohsiung City Council is currently in its fourth term, and the councilors continue to oversee city government in order to maximize the welfare of Kaohsiung citizens.

The City Council is a democratic institution speaking out for justice and carrying out just deeds.  In order to  monitor city government, handle citizens’ petitions, and approve budgets and bills, the council comprises: the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Councilors, Secretary General, Deputy Secretary General, various committees, and a number of offices, including Secretariat Office, Conference Logistics Division, General Affairs Division, Documentation Division, Public Relations Office, Statute Research Office, Information Management Office, Personnel Office and Accounting Office.
